Recyle Your SurfBoard

>> 2/6/09

So far the only thing that really bums me out about being pregnant is that I can’t surf or dive for another 7 or so months. ☹ It’a real bummer since I just got totally geared for diving. I have been told that plenty of pregnant chicks surf, but though I like to surf, I am not the best. I think I might be too clumsy to really pull off surfing with a big ole belly let alone with out one. The last time I went out there was this huge swell and I got caught in a really bad section and almost met my end. It was pretty hectic. So I will not be risking it with a little person growing in me. So while my board and dive gear gathers dust, at least it will not be getting broken in half. If you happen to be unlucky enough to bust your board in half, much like my husband did in Costa Rica, don’t throw it away!!! Surfboards are made out of some pretty toxic materials. Not the greenest things on the planet. Thankfully, Treehugger just turned me on to a company in CA that Is recycling broken boards. They even sell recycled material blanks that you can bring to your favorite shaper for a greener surfing option. Pretty damn cool. So after you have yourself a good cry or maybe a temper tantrum, gather the pieces of your broken friend and recyle that bad boy. Of course, you can always buy a “pre-enjoyed” board from any surf shop for an even greener and economical option. I just realized that I have had the same big blue board for 9 years. I guess I am not as clumsy as I thought.

I think, in order to survive a summer with no surf, I will have to resort to cutting a hole in a bodyboard. Bodyboarding makes me feel like I'm 10 again, which I guess is cool too. Being 10 was such a simple time. You didn't have to think about mortgages, poopy diapers or doing taxes.
