The part-time organic.

If you break down into cold sweats after you see your grocery bill, then you probably can’t afford to buy organic all the time. That’s ok, with the help of my new favorite book “Raising Baby Green: The Earth Friendly Guide to Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Baby Care” I put together a list of the most impact-full organic choices to make and you don’t even have to be knocked up to use it.
Beef, it’s what’s for dinner, if your not a vegetarian of course. *As a disclaimer, you should limit the amount of beef you eat. Cow farts ( as mentioned in an earlier post) contribute more to greenhouse gases than our transportation pollution. But when you must grill some burgers, choose organic beef from grass fed cattle. Not only is the meat leaner, it also contains 5x as much omega-3’s.
Milk, it can do a body good if it isn’t full of hormones and pesticides. This was one of the first things I started only buying organically. The added bonus of this switch, was that the shelf date of organic milk seems to be longer than regular. The USDA found that 27% of regular milk contains pesticides so not consuming poison is always a plus.
You could have a pretty large impact on our agricultural system by just making two relatively small choices in your food purchases. Organically grown cattle reduce pesticides ( which end up in our water and are cutting of the oxygen supply in our oceans) which keeps our pastures healthy and furttile and the cows must be fed organic feed, which also reduces pesticides. Two hundred million acres of farmland in the US are devoted to growing feed for livestock.
