My top 10 offenses to the environment

>> 7/14/08

I'm not perfect and that is why I write this blog. I am hoping that someone reads it and feels me on this stuff. This is my countdown to the stupid non-eco-friendly things that I am guilty of doing on occasion...

10. Though I'm perfectly capable of going through the front door, sometimes out of pure ignorance/bad habit I will open the electronic garage door opener to get into my house. I think maybe it is because I feel more important to have the entire door open just for me or I'm just a creature of bad habits. I have not done this in two months, unless I have a ton of stuff to unload into the garage, like 4 surfboards from an ill-fated surf day.

9. I let vampires into my home. You know, those energy suckers like leaving the computer plugged in even though it is fully charged.

8. Going anywhere in my husbands Chevy Silverado gas-guzzling ridiculously ginormous truck. Since I have to commute at least 10 hours a week, I want a break from all that. So sometimes I elect to have him drive. (I do offer my car, but his head hits the roof because I drive a midget car.) Soon I will have a Prius.....that my husband can actually fit into.

7. I not only sleep with the ceiling fan on high, but also the AC down to 75 and a floor fan on my face. I can only sleep in sub-arctic temperatures and living in Florida doesn't help my cause. I have found a more efficient fan that cools you under the sheets, so hopefully I can cut my energy consumption on that.

6. I am not composting yet, no excuse on that front. I suck.

5. I do practice "If it's yellow let it mellow" but I break that when I have guests come over. I'm not really ready to come out of the closet (or should I say bathroom) on that habit yet. I think my non-eco friends will think that I'm disgusting or something.

4. I don't always buy organic, and sometimes I shop at Walmart. In all honesty I can't always afford the greener option. My rationality is that the money I save from purchasing general items at Walmart or the grocery store, I can spend on greening up my home for energy efficiency and ultimately reducing my carbon footprint.

3. I cannot find a green substitute for Tilex. I don't care what anyone says, I have tried them all and Tilex is the only cleaner that really kills the bubonic mildew that grows through my grout. It comes from behind the grout line, so I obviously have some kind of leak behind the walls that I need to address. I will eventually greenovate my bathroom, but until then I must use Tilex to kill that funk. I also need to purchase a better exhaust fan in there..again, lack of money hinders that.

2. Using my hair dryer in the morning. If I air dry my hair in the AM, it is a frizz ball all day.

1. Forgetting my re-usable bags!!! This really pisses me off when I forget them, this usually happens when I go out and I'm not driving my car. I usually have a stash in there. I do have this bag that my friend Jen gave me that folds up into a wallet ( Target) that I keep in my purse, but sometimes I also forget that?? IDK what is wrong with me!
